TRD (Thermo-Reactive Diffusion)
Our TRD process uses a vanadium carbide layer measuring .0001 to .0008 inches thick with a hardness of 3,200 to 3,800 Vickers that greatly increases the life of forming and shearing tools.
Applications for TRD include the following:
- metal stamping (particularly high strength materials)
- tube forming
- roll forming
- cutting
die casting
- extrusion
- molding
- shearing
- forging
- machine components
TRD is a high temperature, thermal-diffusion process. The carbide layer is formed, or diffused, while the details/tools are immersed in a salt bath furnace that is heated to approximately 1,925 degrees. What results is a very thin, very hard surface treatment that is ideal for severe working conditions.
Benefits of using TRD treatment include:
- hardness
- wear resistance
- friction resistance
- spalling resistance
